When I was about three or four, standing on a stool to reach the countertop, I was tasked with pressing fork ridges into the homemade gnocchi and making tiny holes in the ravioli tops to help them cook - Italian households start you in the kitchen young. By the time I was twelve, I'd been given the job of making the family dessert for Sunday lunch every week. That's really where it started.
I loved making dessert far more than I ever loved the savoury side - there was something so satisfying about seeing everyone's excited face when it landed on the table. I went on to study Food Science at university, which gave me the technical grounding, but the creative, sweet side is what I kept coming back to.
I tried the corporate world for a while - the city, the commute, the 9-to-5, it really wasn't for me. I missed creating and doing what I loved. I've spent the last sixteen years running Let Them Eat Cakes, focused entirely on custom wedding cake designs. Weddings are joyful, happy occasions, it's a lovely industry to be part of, and the cake, of course, is the best bit! But then again, I might be biased.
